Business & General Studies

The faculty of Business & General Studies specializes in providing students with the requisite knowledge and skills required for managing a business in an ever changing world. Graduates are equipped with both the theoretical and practical knowledge which will enable them to become entrepreneurs and or move on to further studies.

Programmes Offered:

 

3rd & 4th year of 4-Yr CCCJ Bachelors Degree Programme

Programme Outcomes: Depending on the area of specialization, graduates are prepared for a wide variety of challenging and  rewarding positions in such fields as accountancy, actuary and business;  banking, investments, corporate financial management, insurance, real estate, financial planning, economic research and market analysis; personal selling, retailing, advertising, product                development, manufacturing, social media, distribution and market research; and manufacturing, public utilities, and             transportation, merchandising and banking, as well as government and non-profit entities.

Entry Requirements: Successful completion of the Associate Degree in Business Studies or other relevant  Associate Degrees    issued by the CCCJ. Consideration will be given to candidates with Associate degrees from other accredited institutions subject to the evaluation of the CCCJ.  Mature status as determined by the CCCJ.

General Courses: Administrative Communication, Macro Economics, Entrepreneurship and New Venture Creation, Operations       Research, Research Methodology, Human Resource Management,  Strategic Management, Organizational Behaviour, Company Law, Introduction to Political Environment,  Management Accounting, Caribbean Economic Development.

Areas of Specialization:

1) Accounting: Financial Management I & II, Financial Accounting II, Taxation I & II, Financial Reporting & Analysis,             Management Information System,  Accounting/ Finance and Management Seminar and Advanced Financial Accounting and Auditing.

2) Finance & Management: Financial Reporting & Analysis, Financial Market Analysis, Project Management, Risk Management & Insurance, Financial Management I & II, Investment Management, Financial Accounting II, Accounting/Finance and      Management Seminar and Supply Chain Management.

3) Marketing: Promotions Management, Marketing Seminar, Sales Management & Practice, Marketing Strategies, Applied     Market Research,  International Marketing, Services Marketing,  Consumer Behaviour, Distribution & Retail Management,  Digital Marketing and Strategic Marketing Management.

4) Human Resource Management: Global Issues in Human Resources,  Dynamics of Leadership, Caribbean Industrial Relations, Organization Conflict & Negotiation, Performance Management, Industrial Relations,   International Business Management,        Training and Human Resource Development, Compensation Management and HR Practicum.

Students are required to complete 240 hours of Work Experience

University of Technology (UTech) Degree Programme  1st & 2nd year

Entry Requirements: 5 CSEC/CXC subjects Gen. I, II, III or  GCE  O’ Level A, B, C, including Mathematics & English Language. Applicants with a lower than a Grade 1 or A in English Language will be required to sit the UTech English Language proficiency test.

Courses include:  Psychology, Academic Writings I & II, College Math 1A,  Calculus, Business Statistics, Environmental Studies, Introduction to Logic, Business Etiquette, Micro and Macro Economics, Business Law,  Fundamentals of Marketing, Fundamentals of Accounting,  Financial Accounting, Introduction to Management, Organizational Behaviour, Financial Management,            Management Accounting, Personal Development and Elective.

Campus & Mode: Montego Bay—Full-time

 

Students are required to complete 40 hrs. of Community Service Programme (CSP)

Applicants must complete the UTech online application along with the MBCC online application and the MBCC application form.  Applicants must select the “FRANCHISE“ programme on the UTech online application.

1st & 2nd year of 4-Yr CCCJ Degree Programme

Programme Outcomes: Graduates will be prepared for entry-level professional positions in management and other business    related employment opportunities in the areas of accountancy, actuary, advertising, banking, economics, event management,   entrepreneurship (small business), finance and administration, hospitality, HR management, marketing, public relations,          purchasing and procurement, retailing and distribution, transport and logistics and travel and tourism.

Entry Requirements: 5 CSEC/CXC subjects Gen. I, II, III or GCE O’ Level– A, B, C, in English Language  and  Mathematics and 3 other  approved subjects. (Students without CXC of GCE Math are required to sit the Foundation Concepts in Mathematics I, II & III at an additional cost). Accounts which is an asset to this programme.  Applicants with a lower than a Grade 1 or A in English Language will be required to sit the English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT). Alternate forms of matriculation:

  1. a) Equivalent qualification (s) as determined by the CCCJ
  2. b) Mature status as determined by the CCCJ

Courses include: Fundamentals of Accounting, Financial Accounting I, Cost Accounting, Communication I & II, Introduction to Psychology I, Fundamentals of Information  Technology, Principles of Microeconomics, Business Law, Caribbean Studies,         Introduction. to Management, Foreign Language I, Small Business Management, Business Ethics, Principles of Marketing, Oral Communication,   Pre-Calculus, Business Calculus, Business Statistics, Computerized Accounting, Introduction to Human          Resource Management and Elective.

2-Yr Programme

Programme Outcomes: Successful candidates will develop the relevant technical knowledge and practical skills required to perform in accounting technician roles.

Entry Requirements: 4 CSEC/CXC subjects Gen. I, II, III or GCE  O’ Level, A, B, C, including English Language and Accounts.    Applicants must be at least 16 years old.

Courses: Recording Financial Transactions, Management Information, Maintaining Financial Records, Managing Costs and         Finances, Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, and Accounting in Business.

Campus & Mode: Montego Bay—Part-time, Westmoreland—Part-time

1-Yr Programme

Entry Requirements: 2 CSEC/CXC subjects including English Language Gen. I, II, III or GCE  O’ Level, A, B, C or professional   certification or passing the HEART/NTA entry test.

Programme overview:  In this programme students will learn to use advanced features of computer applications; customize       packaged software for clients; develop macros and templates for clients using standard products; design organizational documents using computing packages; locate and evaluate on line information; operate a word processing application (basic and advanced); prepare multimedia for different platforms and so on.

Campus & Mode: Westmoreland—Part-time

1-Yr Programme

Entry Requirements: 2 CSEC/CXC subjects including English Language Gen. I, II, III or GCE  O’ Level, A, B, C or  professional   certification or passing the HEART/NTA entry test.

Courses: Quality Customer Service, Communication Skills, Data Entry & Retrieval Procedures, Care for Babies; Care for Children, Children’s Language and Cognitive Development, Children’s Nutritional Needs,  Safety and Well Being of Children, Children’s Physical Needs,  Entrepreneurial Strategies, Children’s Social Development, Child-Oriented Environment, Parenting, and            Evaluating Children’s Daily Activities.
