The Pre-University Faculty collaborates with the Caribbean Examinations Council (C.X.C.) in offering several Caribbean Advanced Proficiency
Examination (C.A.P.E.).

Candidates wishing to apply for admission to undergraduate programmes at UWI should note that:

 

  • For the Faculty of Pure & Applied Sciences: Mathematics and 2 approved Science subjects are required.

  • For the Faculty of Social Sciences: Mathematics at the C.S.E.C. CXC/GCE O’ Level is required.

  • Candidates who do not possess a Grade 1 in C.S.E.C. CXC English A, a Grade A in G.C.E. O’ Level, a Grade 1 or 2 in C.A.P.E. Communication Studies, or a Grade A in the G.C.E. General Paper, are required to take an English Language Proficiency Test on entry.

Programmes Offered:

Candidates may choose 3 of the following C.A.P.E. subjects: History, Sociology, Law, Literatures in English, Geography, Economics.

Communication Studies is compulsory in year 1 and Caribbean Studies is compulsory in year 2.

2-Yr  Programme offered in collaboration with the Jamaica Theological Seminary (JTS)

 Programme Outcomes: Students who complete this programme should be able to occupy positions within Social Agencies, the Justice System, Educational Institutions, Aid Organizations, Communities, Health Sector,           Counselling Agencies, Youth Ministries & Agencies, Community Development.

Entry Requirements: Successful completion of an Associate Degree in Social Work from an accredited institution.

Courses Include: Developmental Psychology, Educational and Psychological Test and Measurement, Theories and Techniques in Counselling II, Social Work Theory and Practice III, Social Gerontology, College English III, Abnormal Psychology, Caribbean Family Life, Substance Abuse and Human Behaviour, Research Project in    Context, Conflict Transformation, Social Planning and Evaluation, Grief Management, Reading the Bible as      Literature, Juvenile Delinquency, Management of Human Service Organizations, Human Sexuality, Social        Psychology, BSW Major Practicum and Electives.

Campus & Mode: Montego Bay—Evening;

Students are required to complete 40 hrs. of Community Service Programme (CSP)

 

2-Yr Council of Community Colleges of Jamaica (CCCJ) Programme

 
Programme Goal
The programme seeks to prepare students with professional knowledge, values, and skills for generalist social work practice by creating an environment that offers value-oriented learning that emphasizes self-assessment, service to the community, self-determination, social justice, and respect for diversity.  

 

Entry Requirements: Successful completion of the Associate Degree in Social Work or other relevant  Associate Degrees issued by the CCCJ. Consideration will be given to candidates with Associate degrees from other         accredited  institutions subject to the evaluation of the CCCJ.  Mature status as determined by the CCCJ

2-Yr CCCJ Programme

 Programme Outcomes:

The profession of social work enables social work practitioners to engage and work with individuals, families, groups, and communities in either the statutory or voluntary sectors in order to foster positive human growth and development, initiate and support change, and fight for social justice.

(Students without CXC or GCE Math are required to sit the Foundation Concepts in             Mathematics I & II at an additional cost). Applicants with a lower than a Grade 1 or A in English Language will be        required to sit the English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT). Alternate forms of matriculation:

  1. a) Equivalent qualification (s) as determined by the CCCJ.
  2. b) Mature status as determined by the CCCJ

2-Yr CCCJ Programme

 Programme Outcomes: Graduates will be equipped with the necessary knowledge to perform at the entry level in           professions where basic psychology may be needed. These professions may include: assistants to social workers, coaches, researchers, counsellors and entry level marketers.  The programme lays the foundation for further studies in the field of Psychology.

Entry Requirements: 5 CSEC/CXC subjects Gen. I, II, III or GCE O’ Level– A, B, C, in English Language  and Mathematics and 3 other approved subjects. (Students without CXC or GCE Math are required to sit the Foundation Concepts in     Mathematics I & II at an additional cost). Applicants with a lower than a Grade 1 or A in English Language will be         required to sit the English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT). Alternate forms of matriculation:

  1. a) Equivalent qualification (s) as determined by the CCCJ

2-Yr CCCJ Programme

Programme Outcomes: Graduates should be able to occupy entry level positions and will be capable of developing and  implementing advanced crime reduction strategies required from modern criminal justice professionals.  They will also be able to apply  investigative techniques, applicable laws and regulations, investigative interviewing methodologies,         evidence collection procedures,  preparation of reports and investigation case management. The programme lays the    foundation for aspiring Criminologists.

Entry Requirements: 5 CSEC/CXC subjects Gen. I, II, III or GCE O’ Level– A, B, C, in English Language, Mathematics  and 3 other  approved subjects. (Students without CXC or GCE Math are required to sit the Foundation Concepts in            Mathematics I & II at an additional cost). 2-Yr CCCJ Programme

Programme Outcomes: Graduates will be able to work in Agri-business logistics and supply chain management, food      processing, food storage and sanitation; greenhouse and crop management or create their own agro-processing       businesses.

Entry Requirements: 5 CSEC/CXC subjects Gen. I, II, III or GCE O’ Level– A, B, C, in English Language, Mathematics  and 3 other  approved subjects. (Students without CXC of GCE Math are required to sit the Foundation Concepts in Mathematics I & II at an additional cost). Applicants with a lower than a Grade 1 or A in English Language will be  required to sit the English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT). Alternate forms of matriculation:

  1. a) Equivalent qualification (s) as determined by the CCCJ
  2. b) Mature status as determined by the CCCJ

Students are required to complete 240 hours of Internship/Work Experience

 

1-Yr Programme

Programme Outcomes: In this programme, students are assisted in improving their qualifications in order to            matriculate into one of our Pre-University or Associate Degree programmes.   Applicants MUST apply for a specific area in the programme to be considered.  Applicants wishing to matriculate into Associate Degree programmes with a lower than a Grade 1 or A in English Language will be required to sit the English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT). 

Entry Requirements: 4 CSEC/CXC subjects Gen. I, II, III GCE  O’ Level subjects A, B, C.

Courses: Students are able to complete at least two (2) CSEC/CXC subjects along with up to three (3) Unit 1 CAPE   subjects OR three (3) Associate Degree courses.  Subject/course choice is based on enrolment numbers.

The CAPE Associate Degree is no longer offered through the Montego Bay Community College.  Students who pursue our Pre-University programmes may qualify for the CAPE Advanced Proficiency Diploma once they have satisfied the requirements as determined by CAPE.  CAPE Certificates and/or the CAPE Advanced Proficiency Diploma (if eligible) are the only certification issued to students who pursue the Pre-University programmes.
